Each list in this blog contains my own personal opinions based on my personal experiences. I acknowledge that there may be a need to add or subtract from these lists (or to create a new subject list), and I welcome such suggestions. The lists are not ordered from higher to lower quality. Each list is a work in progress.
Best-ever lists are a popular way for busy people to save time in doing research on what the best options would be in what they are seeking. Why spend lots of time and effort to figure out the best hiking trails, ski resorts, or places to visit? A best-ever list I’ve prepared based on my experience and research saves you from needing to do that. You can trust my assessments because throughout my life, I have prided myself in knowing how to select the best of the best. Indeed, I leveraged this skill in my work as a town planner. I prepared a computerized ranking system for open space land acquisition. I also evaluated hundreds of land development regulations from communities throughout the nation. I took this research and applied my valuation skills to it, and over and over again, successfully recommended to my city the best, most suitable development regulations that should be adopted for local use.
I have a BA in environmental science from SUNY Plattsburgh & a Master’s in planning from Florida State University. For 20 years, I was a senior planner for Gainesville FL and briefly the growth rate control planner for Boulder CO. Currently, I maintain an independent consulting practice in which I write, edit, and speak about street design, town design, & quality of life. I was the Duckpond Neighborhood Association president in Gainesville FL from 1999 to 2005. I was a member of the Congress for the New Urbanism. I authored several environmental, transportation and urban design plans & regulations for Gainesville. I am in Who’s Who for the South & Southwest. My most recent book is 50 Years of Adventures, Debacles and Achievements: The Story of My Life. Order the paperback version at http://goo.gl/9S2Uab Before that, I published The Car is the Enemy of the City (WalkableStreets, 2010), which can be purchased here http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/the-car-is-the-enemy-of-the-city/10905607 My earlier book, The Road to Ruin, was published by Praeger in 2003 http://www.amazon.com/Road-Ruin-Introduction-Sprawl-Cure/dp/0275981290. I have run the New York City Marathon, and am an avid traveler and adventurer, diver, dancer, kayaker, bicyclist and skier. I am an avid — almost obsessive — list-maker. I happily live in Boulder CO.
