The following is my personal ranking of the best ever lines or phrases used in songs. They are comments that have become commonly used in our culture – often to express important ideas – or are otherwise memorable or entertaining.
Each of these have become an important part of our cultural lexicon. They are therefore endless repeated by others.
Note that some of the sources I cite are not original sources. If you know of the original source, I would appreciate your letting me know.
I acknowledge that there are many wonderful lines or phrases that are not on this list. This is because only those lines or phrases that are important to me, personally, are found on this list. In addition, some of the phrases are not so much profound in and of themselves, but when combined with the music used becomes, in my mind, an unforgettable line.
“Momma always told me not to look into the sun. But momma, that’s where the fun is!!” (Blinded by the Light, Manfred Mann – written by Bruce Springsteen)
“Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away. Now it looks as though they’re here to stay. Oh, I believe in yesterday.” (Beatles)
“I’ve just seen a face, I can’t forget the time or place that we’d just met, she’s just the girl for me, and I want all the world to see we’ve met…Had it been another day, I might have looked the other way, but I had never been aware, and as it is I dream of her tonight…” (Beatles)
Imagine there’s no heaven. It’s easy if you try. No hell below us. Above us only sky. Imagine all the people living for today.
Imagine there’s no countries. It isn’t hard to do. Nothing to kill or die for. And no religion too. Imagine all the people living life in peace.
You, you may say. I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one
“I can’t believe the news today. Oh, I can’t close my eyes. And make it go away. How long…How long must we sing this song. How long, how long…” (U2)

When you’re stuffing yourselves at the Christmas parties, you’ll laugh when I tell you to take a running jump. You’re missing the point I’m sure does not need making; that Christmas spirit is not what you drink. So how can you laugh when your own mother’s hungry and how can you smile when the reasons for smiling are wrong? And if I messed up your thoughtless pleasures, remember, if you wish, this is just a Christmas song. Hey, Santa… pass us that bottle, will you?” (Jethro Tull)
“I got my first real six-string. Bought it at the five-and-dime. Played it till my fingers bled. Was the summer of ’69. Me and some guys from school. Had a band and we tried real hard. Jimmy quit, Jody got married. Shoulda known, we’d never get far. Oh when I look back now. That summer seemed to last forever. And if I had the choice. Yeah, I’d always want to be there. Those were the best days of my life. Ain’t no use in complainin’. When you got a job to do. Spent my evenings down at the drive-in. And that’s when I met you. Standin’ on your mama’s porch. You told me that you’d wait forever. Oh and when you held my hand. I knew that it was now or never.
Those were the best days of my life.” (Bryan Adams)
“Barkeep give me a drink. That’s when she caught my eye. She turned to give me a wink that’d make a grown man cry…I’m callin’ all the shots tonight I’m like a loaded gun.” (Aerosmith)
“We can’t salute ya.’ Can’t find a flag. If that don’t suit ya,’ that’s a drag…Well we got no class and we got no principles. And we got no innocence. We can’t even think of a word that rhymes!! School’s out for summer! School’s out forever!” (Alice Cooper)

“Hello darkness, my old friend. I’ve come to talk with you again. Because a vision softly creeping. Left its seeds while I was sleeping. And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains. Within the sound of silence. In restless dreams I walked alone. Narrow streets of cobblestone. ‘Neath the halo of a street lamp. I turn my collar to the cold and damp. When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light. That split the night. And touched the sound of silence. And in the naked light I saw. Ten thousand people maybe more. People talking without speaking. People hearing without listening. People writing songs that voices never shared
No one dared. Disturb the sound of silence.” (Simon & Garfunkel)
“When you’re weary, feeling small. When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all. I’m on your side. When times get rough. And friends just can’t be found. Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down…When you’re down and out. When you’re on the street. When evening falls so hard. I will comfort you. I’ll take your part. When darkness comes. And pain is all around. Like a bridge over troubled water. I will lay me down.” (Simon & Garfunkel)

Top of the heap.” (Frank Sinatra)(not a rock song, but too good not to include)

Don’t you think our love could last. she said love, lord above, now you try to trick me in love. All right now, baby, its all right now.” (Free)
On the road for forty days, last night in Little Rock put me in a haze. …Feelin’ good, feelin’ right, it’s Saturday night. The hotel detective — he was out-a-sight.
