Top Things in My Life

By Dom Nozzi

The following are the most important things in my life. They give me the most joy, the most gratification, the most precious memories, the most inspiration, and the most energy. I’ve always admired Robert Ingersoll’s statement that “Happiness is the only good. The place to be happy is here. The time to be happy is now. The way to be happy is to make
others so. ”

My girlfriend.

Don’t have one as of this writing, but I am very fortunate to have dated a number of fantastic women.

I find it highly satisfying to teach people (particularly those who are younger) important things I’ve learned in my life — things I wish I knew earlier in my own life, and things I believe are essential to know for a better future.

Removing travel lanes from roads.

Narrowing “overweight,” ruinous, destructive, hostile roads (also known
as “road dieting). Putting roads on a diet is one of the most effective ways for engineers and elected officials to improve quality of life, economic health, and overall happiness in a community.

Giving controversial speeches.

Particularly in support of my book, Road to Ruin, in cities across the
nation. This is a subcategory of “teaching” above.

Living in Boulder CO.

Boulder is unquestionably the best city in the known universe to live in.

Reading influential, fascinating books.

A few of my favorites: Cultural Materialism, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, Ingersoll’s 44 Lectures, Home from Nowhere, Suburban Nation, The Great Good Place, Obedience to Authority, Stuck in Traffic, Cities & Automobile Dependence.

Writing important, controversial thoughts.

Cooking vegetarian meals.

I find much gratification in knowing that others are enjoying foods I’ve cooked.

Enjoying walkable urbanism and instructing others in how to provide it.

Particularly in many European cities, Charleston, Nantucket, Europe,
Key West, Haile Village Center, City Place, Savannah, St Augustine, Boston’s
Back Bay & Beacon Hill.

Watching Emotional Movies.

My favorites: Spartacus, Brazil, Titanic, Wizard of Oz, Apocalypse Now, Kiss of the Spider Woman, American Beauty, Life is Beautiful, Das Boot, Dominick & Eugene, Icicle Thief, The Wedding.

Engaging in Exciting Adventures.

Scuba diving Caribbean coral reefs, kayaking spring-fed Florida rivers,
whitewater rafting the Gauley River, hiking & paragliding the Rockies, skiing
the Rockies, mountain-biking the Rockies, and other activities which give me a
gravity-based adrenalin rush.

I urge you to email me ( or leave a
comment if you have a suggested addition or subtraction from this list. Or if
you have any other thoughts about this list.

Each list in this blog contains my own personal opinions
based on my personal experiences. I acknowledge that there may be a need to add
or subtract from these lists (or to create a new subject list), and I welcome
such suggestions. The lists are not ordered from higher to lower quality. Each
list is a work in progress.
